History of Evensong

Mary Gage researched Evensong in the summer of 1991, while she was an Alden B. Dow Creative Fellow in Midland, Michigan. She listened to the life stories of six people between the ages of 80 and 101 and, during the following year, she wove their memories into a play.

In 1992, Evensong had a reading in the Theater Department at Penn State, followed by a production at the American Theater of Actors on West 54th Street, NYC. Last fall, Evensong was read at the Tuesday night play readings in Webster’s bookshop in downtown State College. This was followed by two readings which were produced by Broad Horizons Theatre Company at the Manhattan Theatre Club on W. 43rd Street, NYC.

Dick Caram directed the recent New York readings as well as the present production, and Helen Manfull, Peg French, and Wilson Hutton took the same roles that they play in tonight’s performance.
