The Full Monty

ABOUT THE PLAY The movie The Full Monty was such a huge international success that theatre producers around the world were anxious to option the movie rights for what would become a smash Broadway musical. Although the film was set in Sheffield, England, the creative team chose Buffalo, New York, and made it a truly American musical. The “team” included Terrence McNally, one of America’s most renowned playwrights, whose works include Ragtime, The Ritz, and Kiss of the Spider Woman. The musical was developed with some new characters and given a modern exciting musical sound. Also, the storyline touched many contemporary issues, such as unemployment, single-parent child rearing, self-image and self-worth. Add some comedy and sensitive lyrics, and a sure-fire successful Broadway show was born. We have tried to present both the drama and the humor in this production. However, most important, The Full Monty isn’t just about showing off the outside, it is about what all of us have on the inside! Valerie Gehn
