Wonderful Town

ABOUT THE PLAY It’s the summer of 1935. Catch the A-train express to Washington Square in Greenwich Village to meet witty Ruth and pretty Eileen Sherwood of Columbus, Ohio-two sisters who sing and dance their way into every kind of comic misadventure as they seek their fortunes in New York City. Ruth aspires to be a writer, while Eileen hopes to achieve success as an actress. Naturally, their efforts are comically thwarted at every turn. First, the girls are coerced by a less than ethical landlord into renting a run-down basement studio apartment. The free-for-all that follows includes oddball characters of every sort, shape and size entering the scene and adding to the hilarity. Will Ruth let her guard down and find true love? Will Eileen ever run out of gentlemen callers? A happy ending is guaranteed (of course)! With delightful music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Wonderful Town is sheer fun for the entire family! MARTHA TRAVERSE DIRECTOR |
