About the Show

There is no overture to CAROUSEL. Instead, the curtain rises to the strains of a waltz on an amusement park in New England. A waltz but no dancing. Music but no singing. Yet without a word being spoken or sung nearly all the major characters are introduced and the basic situation is established. It is not until the next scene, the Bench scene, that we have the first dialogue, a conversation set to music, “You’re a Queer One, Julie Jordan,” that leads to the first real song, “Mister Snow.” Then the long book scene between Billy and Julie that culminates in the love duet, “If I Loved You.” Note the subjunctive mood. “If I Loved You” is hypothetical, doubtful. Not a declaration of love. Not what one expects in a love song. It is not until the next scene, a half hour or so into the show, that we get the first chorus, “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and a shift in time to a few months later. An extraordinary prologue to an extraordinary musical play.
