*ABOUT THE PLAY*

This piece is timeless to me! Ever since the ’88 cult classic movie debuted, the story of Tracy Turnblad has been reshaped and redone just like hairstyles have changed over the years. Yet the message of racial equality and the underdog overcoming adversity in the world (or at least Baltimore) has always remained true.

Hairspray reflects an era where segregation was the unfortunate norm, protesting was commonplace, and going to a racially integrated theatre to see a performance (like you are doing right now)…strictly taboo. We have come so far, and yet we still have miles to go.

The late Stella Adler said it best, “the theatre was created to tell people the truth about life and the social situation”. This is one of the reasons the cast, crew, and production team do what we do. We hope to show you (our audience) that change is possible and that it’s important to persevere when working towards a bigger goal, and that is why you seriously can’t stop the beat of this show!

Yes, you will laugh and hopefully dance your way out of the theatre today, but we hope that this show leaves you both inspired and encouraged to fight for your cause, follow your dreams, and always follow your heart! Remember, you gotta think big, to be big!

Enjoy!
