ABOUT THE PLAY Dear friends, be prepared to “open your eyes”, hearts, and minds for this warm-hearted family musical. “Family musical?” you may be saying, “I thought this was about a gay couple and a bunch of drag queens!” Well, you’re right … and you’re wrong. It is about a gay couple-a loving couple of over twenty years who have raised a son who breaks their heart. That’s right-it’s about a family. You see, the boy is in love with a girl (Heaven forbid), who just happens to be the daughter of an ultra right-winged conservative politician. So, the boy wants the girl to meet his parents, and he thinks it will go over better if one of the parents is a woman. (And, of course, if you don’t have a woman, you make one!) So that’s the story, and some of it is very funny, and yes, we have some leggy drag queens and a bevy of beautiful girls for your enjoyment. But we have something much more. We have a story with a happy ending about two families who learn the true meaning of love, respect, courage and caring … a story beautifully woven by Harvey Fierstein with music by the great Jerry Herman. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to La Cage Aux Folies! Martha Traverse |
