Little Shop of Horrors

*ABOUT THE PLAY* Equal parts quirky and moving, campy and earnest, horrific and hilarious, Little Shop of Horrors has been capturing the imaginations of theatre goers since it burst onto the scene in 1982. The original Off-Broadway production ran for an astounding 2,209 performances and inspired a film adaptation as well as countless productions around the globe. Based on a Roger Corman film from 1960, Little Shop satirizes the science-fiction and horror genres, “B”Movies, musicals, and even the Faust legend. With such an outlandish storyline and themes, a director could worry that people might find it difficult to connect with the material. Fortunately, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken infused Little Shop with so much heart and sincerity that it’s almost impossible not to fall in love with the characters and the show itself. It’s this combination of satire, sincerity, and heart (along with an excellent rock n’ roll score) that has made the show such an enduring hit. Little Shop remains just as fresh and fun as it always has been. As I’ve worked with our very talented cast and crew on Little Shop of Horrors, we’ve all had a great deal of fun with this rollercoaster of a show. My sincere hope is that the fun we’ve had working together on this wonderfully quirky musical will carry right over to all of you watching the show tonight! Enjoy the show! JASON POORMAN DIRECTOR |
