The Curious Savage

ABOUT THE PLAY The Curious Savage has been a pleasure to direct. I have found that the play is more complex and richer than I thought it would be. At first blush Savage appears to be a light drawing room comedy, with a bunch of “loonies” contrasted to an equally crazy “normal” family. Although it certainly remains a delightful comedy, it also examines the meaning of “insanity.” Mixing truly eccentric patients, a rapaciously greedy “family,” a staff that may be a little wacky itself, and $10 million in negotiable bonds, we have a platform to portray both comedy and humanity. We end up with an insight into the various types of human foibles that make us what we are. We question whether anyone is truly sane, but are affirmed in a belief in our collective humanity. It has been a wonderful experience developing this project with this talented and imaginative group of people. I feel privileged to have been a part of it. BRUCE FLEISCHER DIRECTOR |
