About the Show

The King and I opened on Broadway on March 29, 1951 with Gertrude Lawrence and Yul Brenner in the leading roles, received high praise from the critics, and ran for 3 years. Brooks Atkinson of the New York Times described it as “an original and beautiful excursion into the rich splendors of the Far East done with impeccable taste by two artists and brought to life with a warm romantic score.” John Chapman of the Daily News called it “a boldly and handsomely different kind of musical play.” The story of a Victorian English lady who goes to Siam to serve as tutor to the King’s numerous progeny was first told in the book, Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Landon, published in 1944. In 1946 the book was made into movie with the same title and starring Irene Dunne and Rex Harrison. The movie version of The King and I was made in 1956 and starred Deborah Kerr and Yul Brenner.
